This printable free shamrock template for St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect craft for kids. It also makes a great coloring page too!
These templates are made to be printed on standard 8.5×11 printer paper, which makes them great for busy teachers and parents. Below I outline the simple steps to create these two different crafts – but there are tons of possibilities for these shamrock templates.
How to use this free shamrock template
Supplies needed:
- glue stick
- scissors
- green paper
- printer
- 8.5×11 printer paper or card stock
1.) First, print out the free St. Patrick’s day printable onto either regular printer paper or cardstock. I prefer cardstock for cut and paste crafts because it is sturdier. But regular copy paper will do just fine.
2.) Next, get your scissors and green paper. Cut the green paper into small strips that are about 1-2 inches long.
3.) Now, take your paper strips and glue them inside of the shamrock outline to fill it in with color.
4.) after the shamrock craft has dried, hang it up for St. Patrick’s Day decor around your home or classroom.
I used green strips of printer paper but construction paper or tissue paper would work great as well. You can also use green paint and q tips to fill in the shamrock with dots.
Another craft idea would be to color in a festive design within the shamrock.

I absolutely love to work with watercolor and I think that it is a great medium for kids to play with. It is a great way to practice color mixing and control.
We used this shamrock template as a mask to create this fun art project with watercolor paints and a shamrock silhouette for St. Patrick’s Day. I absolutely adore the way this craft turned out and I can’t wait to display it as decoration for St. Patrick’s Day.
This template is very versatile and can be used in a wide variety of St. Patrick’s Day crafts. If you print it out on green paper, you can cut it out and let kids draw something on it or write their name. Enjoy being creative with it!
Supplies
- scissors
- 2 sheets of card stock
- printer
- masking tape
- watercolor paints
- Old tooth brush or paint brush
- cup of water
1.) Print the template out onto card stock or paper and then cut it out along the dotted lines. It is okay if it doesn’t come out perfectly, this project just needs the general shape of a shamrock.
2.) Get another piece of paper, preferably thicker paper like card stock. Tape the shamrock stencil down with masking tape. Don’t overdo the tape because you want the stencil to be easy to remove later on.
3.) Next, set the paper with the stencil down, outside or indoors on some newspaper. Make sure any surfaces are covered that you don’t want paint to splatter on.
4.) Then Wet your paints and coat your paint brush or tooth brush in a lot of paint. You want to make sure that your brush is well saturated with watery paint, so that is splatters very easily.
We used crayola watercolor paints but any watercolor paint will do. You can even water down acrylic or tempura paint if you don not have any watercolor paint on hand.
Tip: for a more artistic look, try using different shades of green. If you don’t have multiple shades of green, you can mix in black, yellow or blue to your green in small amounts.
5.) Now, holding the brush about 6 inches above the paper with the shamrock stencil, Flick and fling the paint all over the paper. This can obviously get messy, so doing this outside is preferable.
If you are using a paint brush, let the kids hold the paint brush in one hand, while tapping on it with the other. If there is enough watery paint on the bristles, then it will splatter onto the paper.
A tooth brush works very well for creating splatters but can be harder to control. Glide your finger across the bristles and the paint will splatter all over the place.
6.) Dab paint loosely all around the outline of the stencil, so that the shape will be more defined. Then continue splattering as much or as little as desired.
7.) Once your painting has dried, you can remove the shamrock stencil and reveal the silhouette of your shamrock. My son really liked the paint covered stencil as well, it came out really neat!
You can modify this for younger children by using finger paints or dot markers instead of paint splatters.
